On this day in 1963...

...the first touch-tone telephone was introduced. When I get frustrated with this modern world, I can usually make myself smile by imagining what text messaging would be like using a rotary dial.



It's obvious that as I grow older I become more easily amused.

As someone who's completely inept at texting, I like to think that rotary would've leveled the playing field.

I still have a rotary phone somewhere. It has a metal wheel.

You do realize that party phones were the first chatrooms, and operators were the original moderators?

There's another video on that list from 1927, before talkies, from Pacific Telephone & Telegraph. May 28, 1927 was when the new service was initiated. Five numbers, and remember, "the dash is not dialed"!
